Vorlage:LabelCheckGreenpeaceAT2018 Demeter is a union of farms and food producers that follow the Demeter principles. It is the third largest union (for members, fourth in size of land) in Germany after Naturland and Bioland. (source)

Its philosophy is based on Rudolf Steiner and exists since 1928. The idea of biodynamic agriculture (an anthroposophical approach based on Steiner's theories) is exceeding organic agriculture.

Today, Demeter has a range of over 3,000 food products as well as some fashion and cosmetics products, mainly being sold in organic stores. It exists in over 60 countries, with over 2,000 farms in Germany and over 200 in each Austria and Switzerland.

Demeter has issued a quality mark for farming. The quality label can be found in Germany as well as Austria and is issued by the Demeter International e.V. (registered association).

The differences to "normal" organic farming (source):

  • Entire conversion of farms (not partially), only organic farming.
  • 100 % organic fodder for animals, between 2/3 and 80 % Demeter food for animals to the minimum, at least 50 % are produced at the own farm.
  • No dehorning.
  • Only few necessary ingredients are allowed (less than all harmless ones).
